Fire Doors
The term ‘fire door’ refers to a fire door leaf, the main component of a fire door assembly or door-set.
The door leaf is installed into a fire-rated frame, complete with its ‘essential ironmongery’ to make the door perform correctly in the event of a fire.
The door is tested as a complete assembly or door-set, and can only work correctly if installed using the same compatible components as when it was tested. Not all Joiners are fire door installers and it is very important that the person that installs your door-set understands the importance of correct installation and BS 476 Parts 19 and 20.
A fire door is not just the door leaf. It is a complete assembly comprising the frame, any glazing, intumescent fire and smoke seals and all the ironmongery that is used on the door, such as hinges, overhead door closers, latches and locks.
Ensure when installing a fire door:
Persons fitting a fire door should be fully trained and competent to do so.
Look for a label or a plug to show that the door is certificated and check the instructions/certificate supplied
Essential Ironmongery such as locks, latches, closers and hinges MUST be CE marked, firmly fixed with no missing screws and compatible with the door leaf’s certification.
The choice of frame/lining/casing and intumescent/smoke seals should also be compatible
The instructions on the door – they should be followed to ensure correct installation
The frame specification – should be correct for the door’s fire rating
The gap between door and frame at the top and sides should be 2-4 mm and the threshold gap as per manufacturers instructions (typically around 8-10 mm) – the certificate will include details of this
Ensure any voids between door frame and wall are tightly packed with mineral wool or a suitable fire resistant material such as mastic that meet the requirements of BS 1366 fire doors
